Roberto Rossellini’s most excellent drama “Journey To Italy” (Viaggio In Italia) has been remastered and about to be re-released shortly by the British Film Institute. Being an Ingrid Bergman fan and having seen this film I figured I’d do a review!
George Sanders and Ingrid Bergman play Alexander and Katherine Joyce, a middle class English couple who travel to southern Italy in order to sell some property and maybe enjoy a little sightseeing while they’re at it. However, the context of their trip and being at leisure in the beautiful Italian countryside seems to accelerate something of a crisis in their already troubled marriage. The film shows the turmoil of this crisis and the accompanying marital despair that has ensued to precipitate it. Being in Italy has made them more aware of themselves and their relationship and whilst this is frustrating they also find some appealing aspects in this “context.” They also find themselves contemplating past relationships. The ending in Pompeii, as the couple see the exhumation of two people at the moment of death, is intense and moving.
My only criticism would be some of the cheesy background Italian love songs seem a little misplaced on occasion but it’s an Ingrid Bergman film, you can’t go too far wrong can you? Plus the DVD itself will be excellent quality, the British Film Institute doesn’t release crap.
I give it 7 out of 10.
