Somewhat unsurprisingly, given that this film is about a severely handicapped man and stars Brenda Fricker I thought of “My Left Foot“. However, this is a new production from Irish film maker Damien O’Donnell (no idea if he’s any relation to Daniel!) whose previous “claims to fame are “East Is East” (very very funny “tickle tackle all gone?”) and Heartlands.
Inside I’m dancing is a film to put disability into a new light, to make you sit up (well maybe not if you’re in the wheelchair I guess!) and “take notice”, to “think different.” The main character Michael has extreme cerebral palsy and lives in a home for the disabled run Brenda Fricker’s character. Because of his condition he is very hard to understand and tends to get passed by and/or ignored most of the time. However, a new resident arrives in the home: Rory. Rory can only move 2 fingers on 1 hand but he’s a trouble maker. He flirts with the nurses and plays very loud music and generally gets under people’s skin. But, he can actually understand every word Michael says and after they become good friends. Shortly they start spending time together on the streets of Dublin, stealing money, going into clubs and generally acting like typical lads their age. However, what they really want is “freedom”, somewhere to call “home” and apply for an apartment which initially falls on deaf ears but they eventually get one with the intervention of Michael’s father and move in and also have a personal assistant to help them with their lives.
The parts are well thought out, well played and very convincing. There’s a number of underlying plots: Michael’s relationship with his father, the difficulty of life being disabled and so on. Overall the film is good, however, I did think the ending was a bit of a cop out but as they say YMMV (your mileage may vary).
I still give it 7 out of 10 as it’s worth watching.
