To be fair I am a big Charlotte Rampling fan and have never seen anything she was in which I didn’t like. In this “noir” style psychological thriller she plays Anna, who is a mysterious, enigmatic and yet lonely “femme fatale”. Gabriel Byrne plays Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Reid, who is in charge of a case in which a man has been brutally murdered in his London apartment. He meets Anna, and there is a mutual attraction.
When I first saw this film it seemed rather confusing and didn’t make sense, however, come the ending it becomes clear and understandable, without leaving you confused and going “eh, what did I just watch?”
It’s hard to say much about the film overall, without revealing the twists (“spoilers!”) but if you like your thrillers in a Hitchcock vein with Tales Of The Unexpected twists then you should enjoy this a lot. On the plus side you get to see the divine Charlotte Rampling, who is still stunning; I’ve never forgiven her for marrying Jean Michel Jarre, lol.
I give it 8 out of 10
